Background of the Study
In educational institutions like Federal University, Kashere, Gombe State, secure file sharing is essential to protect sensitive academic, administrative, and research data. The university’s network is used extensively for file transfers between students, faculty, and staff, making it a prime target for cyber threats such as unauthorized access, data breaches, and malware attacks (Abdullahi et al., 2023). To mitigate these risks, a secure file sharing system is crucial to ensure that files are exchanged safely and with proper access control mechanisms in place.
A secure file sharing system typically incorporates encryption, authentication, and authorization protocols to protect data during transmission and ensure that only authorized individuals can access or modify the files. Techniques such as end-to-end encryption, multi-factor authentication, and secure file storage systems can significantly improve the security of file exchanges on a campus network (Adeyemo et al., 2024). This study aims to design and implement a secure file sharing system tailored to the needs of Federal University, Kashere, to address security concerns and facilitate safe data exchanges within the university’s digital environment.
The growing reliance on digital tools for academic and administrative purposes underscores the need for a robust system to safeguard file transfers, prevent unauthorized access, and ensure the integrity of sensitive data.
Statement of the Problem
The lack of a secure and efficient file sharing system at Federal University, Kashere, exposes the institution to significant security risks, including unauthorized access, data corruption, and leaks of sensitive academic and administrative files. This insecurity can lead to data breaches, loss of intellectual property, and breaches of privacy for students and staff. Therefore, there is a need for a secure file sharing system to protect against these potential threats.
Objectives of the Study
To design a secure file sharing system tailored to the needs of Federal University, Kashere, Gombe State.
To implement the system and evaluate its effectiveness in securing file transfers within the university network.
To recommend best practices for maintaining and optimizing the secure file sharing system.
Research Questions
What are the most appropriate security protocols to include in a file sharing system for Federal University, Kashere?
How effective is the designed file sharing system in securing academic and administrative file transfers at the university?
What are the challenges and solutions for maintaining a secure file sharing system at Federal University, Kashere?
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on the design and implementation of a secure file sharing system specifically for Federal University, Kashere, Gombe State. The study will evaluate the effectiveness of encryption, authentication, and access control mechanisms. Limitations may include resistance to adopting new technologies, technical challenges during implementation, and potential compatibility issues with existing university systems.
